has a long and varied history. At first it was explored as a spiritual practice in the far east and ancient Egypt. Sword swallowing was performed during the Middle Ages as part of street theatre and was popular at festivals and other large gatherings.
It began to die out in the mid-19th century, and was outlawed in Scandinavia
in 1893. In the late 1800's and early 1900's the art was incorporated into the American traveling Carnival and Circus, useually seen at one of the smaller tents of the midway called the SideShow.
Sword swallowing is a skill
in which the performer passes a sword through the mouth and down the esophagus to the stomach. The practice is very dangerous and full of real magic, not an illusion!
